Air India Kathmandu Flight Returns To Delhi After Suspected Technical Issue On AI219

1

NEW DELHI: An Air India passenger aircraft operating flight AI219 from New Delhi to Kathmandu returned to Delhi on September 19 after the crew suspected a technical issue shortly before the aircraft was due to enter Nepali airspace. The aircraft landed safely, all passengers and crew disembarked, and Air India arranged an alternative flight to take passengers to Kathmandu.

The Air India Kathmandu flight departed from Delhi at 2:42 pm IST on Saturday. The Airbus A320-214 was scheduled to reach Tribhuvan International Airport at 4:30 pm Nepal time. According to The New Indian Express, the aircraft returned to Indira Gandhi International Airport and landed at 3:52 pm after the issue was detected in flight.

AI219 Technical Issue Forces Precautionary Return

Air India said the crew operating AI219 on September 19 returned to Delhi because of a suspected technical issue and that the decision was taken in line with standard operating procedures. The airline said the aircraft landed safely and passengers were assisted after disembarking.

The AI219 technical issue was reported while the flight was approaching the Lucknow area, according to an official at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport cited in the report. The airport official said the aircraft had been about to enter Nepali airspace when it was diverted back towards Delhi.

The precise nature of the suspected fault has not been publicly detailed. The available information confirms a suspected technical problem and a precautionary return, but does not establish that a specific aircraft component failed.

Air India Delhi Return Followed By Alternative Flight

The Air India Delhi return did not end the passengers’ journey to Nepal. Air India said its ground team provided immediate assistance at Delhi airport and that passengers were subsequently flown to Kathmandu on an alternative aircraft.

The replacement flight departed from Terminal 3 at about 6:17 pm. The Air India Kathmandu flight was therefore completed through substitute aircraft arrangements after the original service could not continue.

The sequence meant passengers could continue their journey on the same day after the AI219 technical issue forced the original aircraft back to Delhi.

The incident occurred as Delhi’s aviation infrastructure was also undergoing operational changes. The capital’s Delhi Airport third runway returned to service on September 20 after rehabilitation work, restoring another runway to the airport’s network.

No Injuries Reported After Safe Landing

No injuries were reported in the available accounts of the incident. Air India’s statement said all passengers and crew safely disembarked after the Air India Kathmandu flight returned to Delhi.

The airline described the return as a precautionary measure and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the disruption. The Air India Delhi return was therefore followed by a passenger transfer rather than a cancellation of the Kathmandu journey.

For now, the publicly available information does not identify the exact technical fault or indicate whether further investigation findings will be released. The immediate operational response was a safe return to Delhi, passenger disembarkation and onward travel on another aircraft.
