Man Utd vs Sabah Live -Mbeumo Puts United Ahead at Old Trafford

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United have taken a 1-0 lead over Sabah in their Champions League opener at Old Trafford, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring in the 28th minute as United began their return to Europe’s premier club competition.

The goal came after United had struggled to find a way through Sabah’s organised defence during the opening stages. The hosts gradually increased the tempo of their passing before finding the breakthrough.

Sabah’s Kaheem Parris gave the ball away while attempting to play infield. The ball moved through Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Bruno Fernandes before Fernandes released Patrick Dorgu on the left.

Dorgu’s low cross reached Mbeumo near the front post. The forward got to the ball first and headed it down, with the effort going in off goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov. It was Mbeumo’s first Champions League goal.

United had looked more dangerous in the few minutes before the goal, although Sabah had shown that they were not prepared simply to sit back at Old Trafford.

The visitors threatened again shortly after the opener. Parris found space on the right and delivered a low cross towards Joy-Lance Mickels, but Youri Tielemans intervened with an important defensive challenge.

United return to the Champions League

The fixture marks Manchester United’s return to the Champions League after a three-season absence. UEFA records this as United’s 26th Champions League campaign, an English record. Their previous appearance came in the 2023-24 season, when they finished bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

United’s last European campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final.

The club entered Thursday’s match after a mixed start to the domestic season. United drew 2-2 away to Everton in their most recent Premier League game after conceding an injury-time equaliser. They had previously beaten Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford.

Manager Michael Carrick has made some changes to his starting side for the European opener, with Benjamin Sesko making his first start of the season. Patrick Dorgu also started at left-back, while Luke Shaw was left out after experiencing a cramp against Everton.

The starting XI was Senne Lammens in goal, with Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez and Dorgu in defence. Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo formed the midfield pairing, while Mbeumo, Fernandes and Matheus Cunha played behind Sesko.

Sabah making Champions League history

For Sabah, the match represents the Azerbaijani club’s first appearance in the Champions League league phase.

The club reached this stage after a lengthy qualifying campaign. Sabah overcame KuPS, Aarhus GF and Hapoel Be’er Sheva to secure its place in the competition. Against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Sabah overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit by winning the return match 5-2.

Sabah also arrived in Manchester in strong domestic form. The club had won its opening three Azerbaijani league matches and was second in the table, according to the latest match reporting.

The Azerbaijani side is managed by Valdas Dambrauskas, whose path to the Champions League has attracted attention because of his unusual route into professional football. He previously worked with London Tigers before moving into professional coaching and eventually taking charge of Sabah.

United still have work to do

The early lead gives United control of the match, but Sabah have already demonstrated that they can cause problems when given space.

Carrick had stressed before kick-off that United would respect their opponents, pointing to Sabah’s results and attacking approach.

The timing of the fixture also creates an additional challenge for United. The club is due to face Manchester City in the derby on Sunday, leaving Carrick with a short recovery period after the Champions League opener.

For now, however, United’s immediate priority is securing a positive start to their European campaign.

Mbeumo’s goal has given them that advantage, but Sabah remain within one goal of an equaliser and have continued to look capable of testing the home defence.

Match status at the latest verified update: Manchester United 1-0 Sabah.
