Inter vs Udinese: Inter Win 5-3 to Stay Level With Roma

Inter vs Udinese - Inter Win 5-3 to Stay Level With Roma

Inter Milan produced another comeback victory in Serie A on Monday, overturning an early two-goal deficit to beat Udinese 5-3 at San Siro and maintain their perfect start to the season.

Udinese stunned the defending champions with goals from James Abankwah and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp inside the opening 16 minutes. Inter responded before half-time through Carlos Augusto and Nicolò Barella, then took control after the break with goals from Marcus Thuram, Francesco Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny.

Idrissa Gueye scored a late consolation for Udinese, but Inter held on for their fourth consecutive league victory.

The win leaves Inter and Roma level on 12 points from four matches. Roma remain first on goal difference, with a record of 12 goals scored and one conceded, compared with Inter’s 13 goals scored and six conceded. Como are third on 10 points.

Udinese make fast start at San Siro

Udinese needed only nine minutes to take the lead.

Unai Gomez’s delivery after a cleared corner found Abankwah, who headed past Josep Martinez to give the visitors an early advantage.

Inter were then hit again in the 16th minute. Keinan Davis supplied the ball for Ekkelenkamp, whose close-range finish doubled Udinese’s lead.

The response from the hosts was immediate.

Carlos Augusto pulled one back in the 26th minute with a long-range strike before Barella equalised nine minutes later. The midfielder recovered from a slip inside the penalty area and finished to make it 2-2.

The teams went into half-time level.

Thuram puts Inter in front

Inter continued to press after the break and finally moved ahead in the 57th minute.

Andy Diouf reached the byline and cut the ball back into the area, where Thuram finished first time to put the champions 3-2 ahead.

Pio Esposito added a fourth 10 minutes later, finding space inside the Udinese penalty area before calmly finishing past Maduka Okoye.

Bonny then extended Inter’s advantage in the 79th minute. His initial effort was saved, but he followed up to make it 5-2.

Udinese managed one final response when Gueye converted after a fast counter-attack in stoppage time, but there was no way back for Kosta Runjaic’s side.

Another comeback for Chivu’s side

The result marked the second consecutive Serie A match in which Inter had recovered from a two-goal deficit.

Last weekend, Inter also fell 2-0 behind against Napoli before Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 victory. The Udinese match was less tense at the finish, but the pattern was familiar: Inter conceded early and then gradually took control.

Inter’s five goals also made it their fourth match in 2026 in which they have scored at least five times, according to beIN Sports’ match analysis.

The victory was particularly important after Inter’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League on September 8. Carlos Augusto scored Inter’s goal in that match, and he was again on the scoresheet against Udinese.

For Udinese, the defeat continued a difficult sequence against top opposition. The club said the team had taken a two-goal lead for the second straight match but again ended up losing. Udinese remain on four points after four league games.

Inter and Roma meet at the summit

The result sets up an early-season meeting between the two teams with perfect records.

Roma also won on Monday, beating Torino 2-0 away from home through goals from Donyell Malen and Niccolò Pisilli. Malen opened the scoring before Pisilli sealed the victory in stoppage time.

Roma and Inter now both have four wins from four matches and 12 points.

Their head-to-head meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, with kick-off set for 6 p.m. CEST.

That match will determine which of the two early pace-setters can claim outright momentum at the top of Serie A.

For now, Inter have shown that an early setback does not necessarily derail them. Against Udinese, a two-goal hole became a two-goal victory.
