Delhi Airport Third Runway Resumes Operations After Seven-Month Upgrade
DELHI: Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is bringing its third runway, 11R/29L, back into service on September 20 after almost seven months of rehabilitation. The Delhi Airport third runway was closed in February for extensive strengthening and infrastructure work designed to improve safety, aircraft movement and long-term operational efficiency.
The reopening follows completion of the rehabilitation programme and receipt of the required regulatory approvals. The DIAL upgrade project is expected to strengthen the airport’s ability to handle growing flight and passenger volumes.
Runway 11R 29L Reopening Follows Major Rehabilitation
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the airport, said Runway 11R/29L will resume operations after undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation.
The runway was shut on February 25, 2026, for the work. It had been in continuous service since being commissioned in 2008, apart from routine maintenance and earlier minor rehabilitation.
The Runway 11R 29L reopening comes after inspections, validations and regulatory clearances were completed. The project involved resurfacing and strengthening the runway pavement, along with other airside improvements.
According to NDTV, DIAL said the upgraded runway is expected to improve operational efficiency and support smoother aircraft movement.
New Taxiway And Lighting Systems Added
A key part of the DIAL upgrade project was the construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway, designated RET Z1. A rapid-exit taxiway allows aircraft to leave the runway more quickly after landing, potentially reducing the amount of time each aircraft occupies the runway.
The rehabilitation also included improvements to the airfield ground lighting system and related civil and electrical infrastructure. The changes are intended to improve operational reliability, including during varying weather conditions.
The Delhi Airport third runway is particularly important because the airport handles a high volume of daily aircraft movements. Returning the runway to service restores infrastructure that had been unavailable during the rehabilitation period.
Reopening Comes As Delhi Prepares For Higher Traffic
The Runway 11R 29L reopening comes as Delhi Airport continues to prepare for rising passenger and aircraft demand.
DIAL has said the upgraded infrastructure is intended to support the airport’s long-term capacity requirements while improving the efficiency of existing operations. The runway improvements are therefore not simply a maintenance exercise but part of wider efforts to strengthen the airport’s airside infrastructure.
The development also follows recent aviation restrictions around the capital during the BRICS summit, when authorities introduced temporary controls on several types of aircraft and aerial activity. Those aviation restrictions were separate from the runway rehabilitation programme.
What The Reopening Means For Passengers
The Delhi Airport third runway returning to service does not mean every flight will automatically avoid delays. Flight schedules remain dependent on weather, air traffic control, aircraft movements and other operational factors.
However, restoring 11R/29L gives airport authorities another runway resource and removes the constraints created by its seven-month closure.
The DIAL upgrade project has also introduced infrastructure intended to reduce runway occupancy time and improve aircraft movement. The full operational impact will become clearer as airlines and air traffic controllers begin using the upgraded runway under normal traffic conditions.
The Runway 11R 29L reopening marks the completion of one of the airport’s major airside rehabilitation projects in 2026 and restores the third runway to Delhi’s aviation network from September 20.
