Zimbabwe Defeat Namibia After Dramatic Final-Over Finish

WINDHOEK, Namibia — Zimbabwe held their nerve in a frantic finish to beat Namibia by five runs on Monday, securing their first victory of the Namibia T20I Tri-Series after a match that swung sharply between both sides.

Zimbabwe posted 195/6 after recovering from 101/6, with Ryan Burl and Brad Evans putting together a crucial 94-run partnership. Namibia appeared to have completed an extraordinary chase before four wickets fell in the final over, leaving the hosts all out for 190.

The match was played at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek and was the third match of the tri-series, which also features South Africa. The three teams are using the tournament as part of their preparations ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which they will co-host.

Zimbabwe recover after dramatic collapse

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus won the toss and elected to field, but Zimbabwe’s opening pair of Ben Curran and Brian Bennett immediately put pressure on the hosts.

The two added 50 runs in only 4.5 overs, with Zimbabwe reaching 64 before Bennett was dismissed for 32 from 21 balls at the end of the Powerplay.

What followed was a dramatic collapse.

Bernard Scholtz removed Dion Myers, while Erasmus dismissed Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza with his first delivery. Max Heingo then accounted for Curran, who had made 38 from 22 balls.

Zimbabwe fell from 64 without loss to 76/4 and then slipped to 79/5.

Another wicket left them in deeper trouble before Burl and Evans changed the course of the innings.

Burl and Evans turn the match around

Burl and Evans attacked the Namibia bowling during the closing overs, adding 94 runs from 48 balls.

Their partnership was Zimbabwe’s highest seventh-wicket stand in T20Is. Burl remained unbeaten on 57 from 32 balls, while Evans scored 37 as Zimbabwe reached 195/6 from their 20 overs.

Erasmus was Namibia’s most successful bowler, finishing with 3/46. Heingo, Scholtz and JJ Smit took one wicket apiece.

Zimbabwe’s total gave Namibia a demanding but achievable target of 196.

Namibia launch an extraordinary comeback

The hosts made a difficult start to their chase.

Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Louren Steenkamp for six, while Erasmus was removed for 12 after Brian Bennett took the catch. Namibia reached 34/2 at the end of the Powerplay.

Jan Frylinck and Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton tried to rebuild the innings, but Zimbabwe continued to take wickets. Frylinck made 22 before Wellington Masakadza dismissed him, and Bennett then removed JJ Smit for six.

Namibia subsequently fell to 76/6, leaving Zimbabwe firmly in control.

But Zane Green and Alexander Volschenk had other ideas.

The pair launched a remarkable counterattack, scoring 110 runs from just 51 balls. It became Namibia’s highest seventh-wicket partnership in T20Is.

Green smashed 54 from 26 balls, while Volschenk made 56 from 29. Their hitting brought Namibia back into contention and transformed what had looked like a comfortable Zimbabwe victory into a final-over contest.

Zimbabwe survive the final over

Namibia needed 11 runs from the final five balls and was within touching distance of an unlikely victory.

The decisive moment came when Green was run out by a direct hit from Sikandar Raza. Volschenk then fell to a one-handed catch from Tadiwanashe Marumani.

Two further wickets followed in the closing deliveries, including another run-out, and Namibia were bowled out for 190.

Zimbabwe therefore won by five runs, with Brad Evans holding his nerve during the decisive final over.

The result gives Zimbabwe their first victory of the tri-series after their opening defeat to South Africa. South Africa had beaten Zimbabwe by seven wickets on August 29, with Dewald Brevis making an unbeaten 75 from 32 balls.

Namibia had entered Monday’s match with a win over South Africa, having beaten the Proteas by 18 runs in the tournament opener.

Tri-series continues in Windhoek

The tournament features Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa in a double round-robin league. The top two teams will meet in the final on September 6.

Zimbabwe’s next match is against South Africa on September 1, again at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. Namibia and Zimbabwe are scheduled to meet again on September 3.

The result also gives Zimbabwe an important boost after their opening loss, while Namibia will be left to reflect on a chase that came within a handful of runs of one of the tournament’s most dramatic victories.
