Lionel Messi Ends His Argentina Career After 207 Caps

Lionel Messi has retired from international football, bringing his Argentina career to an end after more than two decades and 207 appearances for his country.

The 39-year-old announced the decision on Monday, August 31, in a statement posted to Instagram. Messi said he had spent considerable time thinking about the decision and concluded that it was time to step away from the national team.

His last match for Argentina was the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain on July 19. Argentina lost 1-0 after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute.

Messi leaves the national team as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer, with 207 caps and 125 goals.

Messi says the time has come

In his farewell statement, Messi said the decision was painful but that he believed it was the right moment to leave.

“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come,” he wrote.

Messi also said he had always given everything to Argentina and suggested that the emergence of younger players was another reason to make room for the next generation.

“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, some great young players are coming up who deserve to be here,” he said.

The message marked the end of a complicated but ultimately hugely successful relationship between Messi and the Argentina shirt.

From early disappointment to World Cup glory

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and spent much of his early international career carrying the weight of expectations that followed him from Barcelona.

Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany, while Messi also experienced defeats in the Copa América finals in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, following another Copa América final loss, he briefly announced his retirement from international football before returning to the national team.

The breakthrough finally came at the 2021 Copa América, when Argentina defeated Brazil in the final at Rio de Janeiro.

That was followed by another Copa América title in 2024 and, most importantly, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina defeated France on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the final, with Messi scoring twice. The victory gave Messi the major international title that had eluded him for much of his career.

A final World Cup at home with Argentina

Messi returned for what became his sixth World Cup in 2026.

FIFA records show that he became the first player to appear at six editions of the men’s World Cup. He also finished the tournament with 21 World Cup goals, having scored in the group stage and knockout rounds.

His tournament began with a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria. FIFA noted that the performance made Messi the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick for Argentina and took him level with Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals.

He then moved beyond Klose’s mark by scoring twice against Austria, becoming the outright leading scorer in World Cup history at that point.

Messi ultimately reached another World Cup final with Argentina, but the campaign ended in defeat.

Spain won the July 19 final 1-0 in extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium, denying Argentina the chance to defend its 2022 title.

His decision had been considered before the announcement

Messi’s retirement announcement came weeks after the World Cup final, rather than immediately after the tournament.

Reuters reported that Messi had already been considering his future after the defeat. The death of his father, Jorge Messi, earlier in August also came during a period when the footballer was reflecting on how much longer he wanted to continue playing.

The timing of Monday’s announcement therefore formalized a decision that Messi had been weighing for some time.

His statement also indicated that the decision was not limited to disappointment over the World Cup final. Messi described it as the closing of a chapter after giving everything he felt he had to the national team.

What Messi leaves behind

Messi’s international record places him at the top of several of Argentina’s statistical lists.

He finishes with 207 appearances and 125 goals for the senior national team, both national records.

His Argentina honours include the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and Olympic gold with Argentina in 2008. He also won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Argentina in 2005.

His World Cup career stretched from Germany 2006 through the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. FIFA lists him as the player with the most World Cup appearances, with 27 matches.

There was also a final individual record during the 2026 tournament. Messi finished with 21 World Cup goals, although Kylian Mbappé later moved ahead of him with 22.

International career ends, club football continues

Messi’s retirement from Argentina does not mean the immediate end of his playing career.

He continues to play club football for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Reuters and other reports said his Inter Miami contract runs through the end of the 2028 season.

That leaves Messi’s future at club level separate from his decision to no longer represent Argentina.

For the national team, however, Monday’s announcement closes a career that began when Messi was a teenager and ended with him as the country’s most decorated and statistically dominant international player.

Argentina now moves toward a post-Messi era, with the responsibility of leading the team passing to a younger generation.

For Messi, the final chapter with the national team ends not with another trophy, but with the World Cup title he had spent much of his career chasing — and a record that is unlikely to be easily matched.
