India Weather Alert: Rain Expected Across East, Northeast and Hills
New Delhi, September 9, 2026: The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of India over the coming days, with particularly heavy weather expected across eastern and northeastern states and parts of the Himalayan region.
However, the latest IMD data does not show a nationwide warning for heavy rain continuously from September 12 through September 21. The department’s currently published subdivision warnings extend through September 15, and the intensity and location of rainfall vary significantly by region.
The distinction matters because the viral-style claim that the entire country will experience heavy rain between September 12 and 21 is broader than the latest official forecast supports.
Odisha remains under close watch
The IMD said on September 9 that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. Under its influence, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall was forecast over Odisha from September 9 to 11.
The department’s Bhubaneswar meteorological centre has also issued a more detailed seven-day warning. Odisha is under a heavy-rain warning on September 9, a very heavy rain warning on September 10 and another heavy-rain warning on September 11. A heavy-rain warning is also listed for September 12.
The weather system is therefore expected to keep parts of eastern India active even as conditions vary elsewhere.
Northeast India could see several days of heavy rain
The latest IMD warnings show a more persistent period of wet weather in parts of the Northeast.
Assam and Meghalaya are under heavy-rain warnings from September 9 through September 15. Thunderstorms, lightning and squally conditions are also included in the warnings for several of the earlier days.
The IMD’s September 9 national warning also identifies several northeastern states among areas expected to receive heavy rainfall. The wider forecast covers Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Uttarakhand faces an extended rain warning
Uttarakhand is another area where the current forecast points to several consecutive days of unsettled weather.
The IMD’s September 9 warning lists heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning for Uttarakhand from September 10 through September 15.
For residents and travellers in the hill state, the repeated warnings are more relevant than a generalized nationwide rain forecast because rainfall intensity can vary sharply between districts and locations.
Punjab and Haryana may see rain later in the period
The weather picture is different across parts of northwest India.
The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre’s September 9 forecast shows no heavy-rain warning for September 12 and 13, but heavy rain is forecast for Punjab and Haryana on September 14 and 15.
The Tribune, citing the IMD, reported Wednesday that heavy rainfall could occur at a few places in Punjab and Haryana on September 14 and 15. It also reported that rainfall had remained below normal in both states during the season and that monsoon activity had been weak in recent days.
The IMD warning data therefore points to a shift in rainfall activity rather than one continuous spell covering the entire country.
Telangana also has a short-term warning
Parts of peninsular India are not expected to remain completely dry.
The IMD’s Hyderabad centre has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds over Telangana on September 11 and 12. The warning for the state changes to thunderstorms and strong winds on September 13, with no warning listed for September 14 and 15.
This again illustrates why state- and region-specific forecasts are more useful than treating the September weather outlook as a single national rain event.
What the latest forecast actually shows
The most recent official IMD information available on September 9 supports a period of active and uneven rainfall across parts of India, rather than a confirmed nationwide heavy-rain spell from September 12 to 21.
The department’s published subdivision forecast currently covers September 9 through September 15. It includes heavy or very heavy rain warnings in different regions on different dates.
The IMD has also published a September 9 press release specifically warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha from September 9 to 11 because of the expected low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal.
For the period after September 15, the currently available warning material does not establish a nationwide heavy-rain alert through September 21. Forecasts can change as weather systems develop, particularly during the monsoon season.
For that reason, the claim that the entire country will receive heavy rainfall from September 12 to 21 should not be presented as an official IMD nationwide warning at this stage.
What happens next
The immediate focus is on the developing low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal and its influence on eastern India, particularly Odisha. At the same time, weather departments are monitoring rainfall over the Northeast and Himalayan states, while another spell of rain is expected over parts of Punjab and Haryana around September 14 and 15.
The IMD’s short-range warnings are likely to be revised as new observations and forecast models become available.
For readers planning travel or outdoor activities, the relevant state and district-level IMD warnings should be checked rather than relying on a generalized September 12-21 rainfall claim.
