Nila Vikhe Patil Elected to Swedish Parliament From Stockholm
STOCKHOLM: Nila Vikhe Patil has been elected to Sweden’s 349-member Riksdag from the City of Stockholm constituency after the country’s national election on September 13, 2026. The Green Party politician, who has strong family ties to Maharashtra, will formally begin her parliamentary term on September 28.
Nila Vikhe Patil Wins Stockholm Seat
The election places Nila Vikhe Patil among Sweden’s newly elected lawmakers and gives the Green Party representation through the Stockholm constituency. The official parliamentary record lists her as a Green Party member representing City of Stockholm.
Speaking after the result, she told PTI that being part of the 349-member chamber felt good and that she looked forward to contributing to Stockholm and Sweden. She also said she wanted to represent people who cannot vote and work on children’s welfare and environmental issues. Indian Express reported her comments after the election.
Maharashtra Roots Draw Attention
The election has attracted particular attention in Maharashtra because Nila Vikhe Patil is the daughter of educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil and granddaughter of former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. She is also the niece of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. She was born in Sweden and spent part of her early childhood in Ahmednagar before continuing her career in Swedish public life.
Her political career in Sweden predates the parliamentary election. She previously served as a political adviser in the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office during Stefan Löfven’s tenure, working on finance, taxation and housing, and she has also been involved in Stockholm municipal politics.
The result adds another prominent example to recent coverage of the Indian diaspora holding public or professional roles abroad, including Indian-origin communities involved in political and civic debates in the United States.
Swedish Parliament Term Begins September 28
Sweden’s Election Authority confirmed the final 2026 parliamentary result on September 19, with 6,834,413 people voting and turnout recorded at 84.9%. The official parliamentary register lists Nila Vikhe Patil as an elected member for the 2026–2030 term.
Her election is also notable for the visibility it has given to the Indian diaspora connection between Maharashtra and Sweden. Her background combines Swedish political experience with longstanding family links to India.
‘First Indian-Origin Woman’ Claim Needs Caution
The Swedish Parliament election itself is confirmed, but the description of Nila Vikhe Patil as the “first Indian-origin woman” elected to Sweden’s national legislature should be treated cautiously. The official records and major reports reviewed confirm her election, constituency and party affiliation, but do not independently establish that she is the first woman of Indian origin ever elected to the Riksdag.
Her election nonetheless represents a significant development for the Indian diaspora in Sweden and places her among the country’s newly elected national lawmakers.
