Chhote Lal Verma Dies: Fatehabad BJP MLA Passes Away in Noida
AGRA, Uttar Pradesh — Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Chhote Lal Verma, who represented the Fatehabad assembly constituency in Agra, died at a hospital in Noida on Thursday, September 24, 2026. He was 73.
Verma had fallen ill after developing a fever and was initially admitted to a private hospital in Agra when his condition deteriorated. His family later took him toward Delhi for further treatment, but his condition worsened on the way. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Noida, where he died during treatment, according to reports from PTI and other news organisations.
The circumstances surrounding his death have been reported somewhat differently. Family sources cited by The Times of India said Verma suffered a cardiac arrest, while official and other reports have primarily described his illness, hospitalisation and subsequent death without independently establishing a medical cause.
Yogi Adityanath expresses condolences
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mourned Verma’s death in a post on X on September 24.
The chief minister described the death of the Fatehabad MLA as deeply distressing and offered prayers for the departed soul and for strength to the bereaved family. The statement was also reported by All India Radio News and multiple Uttar Pradesh news outlets.
Other political figures also expressed condolences. BJP Uttar Pradesh president Pankaj Chaudhary contacted Verma’s family, while Fatehpur Sikri MP Raj Kumar Chahar was also among those who paid tribute, according to reports published after the death.
Four-time representative of Fatehabad
Verma had a long political association with the Fatehabad constituency. Reports published after his death said he had represented the seat four times.
Election records show that Verma first won Fatehabad as a BJP candidate in 1993 and returned to the assembly in 2002. He later won the seat on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket in 2012 before returning to the BJP and winning again in 2022.
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, Verma secured 108,811 votes, or 50.46% of the vote, defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Rupali Dixit by 53,235 votes. The results are recorded in election data compiled by the Election Commission of India.
His 2022 victory made him the sitting BJP MLA for Fatehabad at the time of his death.
Final journey in Agra
According to a report published by Hindustan on Friday, Verma’s body was brought back to Agra after post-mortem formalities in Noida. His family said the final viewing was scheduled at his residence in Vibhav Nagar before the body was to be taken to his ancestral village, Nagla Devhans.
The report said his last rites were scheduled to take place at a cremation ground near the Yamuna in the village, with state honours planned.
The details of the funeral arrangements are based on information provided by family members and reported locally.
Political career
Verma’s political career spanned more than three decades, according to biographical accounts published following his death. Amar Ujala reported that he began his political work at the grassroots level and eventually became a four-time representative of Fatehabad.
His electoral record also reflected periods with different political parties. He won Fatehabad for the BJP in 1993 and 2002, represented the constituency for the BSP in 2012, and returned to the BJP before his 2022 victory.
Verma’s death leaves the Fatehabad assembly seat without its sitting MLA. As of the latest reports reviewed for this article, no official announcement regarding the timing or procedure for filling the vacancy had been identified.
The story remains subject to updates as further official information and details from the family become available.
