BCCI Names India T20 Squad for West Indies Series as Shreyas Iyer Leads New-Look Side
NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced a 15-member squad for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, with Shreyas Iyer named captain and Tilak Varma appointed vice-captain. The India T20 Squad Announcement came on September 16, ahead of the white-ball home series beginning later this month.
The BCCI Team India Squad includes several established T20 players alongside younger options, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prince Yadav. The five T20Is will be played in Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru between October 6 and October 17.
Shreyas Iyer Returns As T20 Captain
Iyer will lead an Indian side that also includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube.
The wicketkeeping options are Ishan Kishan and Samson, while the batting group also features Nitish Kumar Reddy. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar provide all-round options, with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi included among the specialist spinners.
The Indian Cricket Team Selection also brings in three fast-bowling options in Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav. The BCCI announcement does not describe the selection of any omitted fast bowler as a workload-management decision, making it important not to infer a reason that has not been officially stated.
Mayank Yadav Included After Fitness Concerns
Mayank Yadav’s inclusion will attract particular attention because the fast bowler has previously faced fitness setbacks. His presence gives India another pace option as the selectors continue to assess their T20 bowling combination.
The squad announcement also follows India’s recent T20 campaign against Afghanistan, where the team featured several of the same players. Earlier coverage of Jasprit Bumrah’s T20 return highlighted his return to the format after a fitness assessment.
Bumrah, however, is not part of the five-match West Indies T20I squad announced on September 16. Arshdeep Singh remains the leading left-arm pace option in the selected group.
Five T20Is Scheduled Across India
The West Indies tour begins with three ODIs before the T20I leg starts on October 6 in Lucknow. The second match will be played in Ranchi on October 9, followed by games in Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14 and Bengaluru on October 17.
The BCCI Team India Squad therefore enters a busy stretch of international cricket, with selection decisions also taking place against the backdrop of the Indian cricket team’s Asian Games campaign.
For the Indian Cricket Team Selection, the West Indies series provides five opportunities to assess the T20 group before India’s next major assignments. The India T20 Squad Announcement also confirms Iyer’s leadership role as India continues to develop its post-World Cup T20 combination.
