Mohun Bagan Survive NorthEast United Shootout to Set Up Kolkata Derby Final

Mohun Bagan Super Giant booked their place in the Durand Cup 2026 final after beating defending champions NorthEast United FC 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in regulation time in Shillong on Thursday.

The second semifinal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium remained goalless after 90 minutes, sending the contest to a penalty shootout. Mohun Bagan held their nerve to complete another tense knockout victory and set up a Kolkata derby final against East Bengal.

The result ends NorthEast United’s attempt to reach a third consecutive Durand Cup final and puts Mohun Bagan within one victory of an 18th title.

Mohun Bagan survive another penalty drama

Penalty shootouts have become a defining feature of Mohun Bagan’s knockout campaign this year.

The club had already needed a shootout to overcome Jamshedpur FC in the quarterfinals. That match finished 1-1 after regulation time before Mohun Bagan prevailed 9-8 in the penalties, with goalkeeper Vishal Kaith making the decisive save.

Against NorthEast United, the Mariners again failed to find a breakthrough during normal time but were more clinical when the semifinal went to the spot.

The victory also adds another chapter to the recent rivalry between the two clubs. NorthEast United entered the semifinal as the reigning champions, while Mohun Bagan came in as the competition’s record winners with 17 titles.

NorthEast United’s title defence ends in Shillong

NorthEast United had arrived in the semifinal after a strong quarterfinal performance against Shillong Lajong.

The Highlanders recovered from a 2-1 halftime deficit to win 5-2, with Alaaeddine Ajaraie scoring a hat-trick. The result sent NorthEast United into the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

Their defeat on Thursday means the club will not complete a potential third straight Durand Cup title.

The Highlanders had won the previous two editions and were seeking another appearance in the final before Mohun Bagan ended their run in the 2026 competition.

East Bengal await in the final

Mohun Bagan’s victory completes the final lineup for the 2026 Durand Cup.

East Bengal had secured their place a day earlier by defeating SC Delhi 5-3 on penalties after their semifinal also finished 0-0 following 90 minutes.

East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill saved two penalties during the shootout, while East Bengal converted all five of their attempts to reach the final.

The result sets up one of Indian football’s biggest domestic rivalries for the tournament’s showpiece match.

Mohun Bagan had already defeated East Bengal 1-0 in the opening Kolkata derby of the competition on July 25, with Sahal Abdul Samad scoring the only goal.

The final will therefore allow East Bengal to respond to that early defeat, while Mohun Bagan will be aiming to complete the tournament with another trophy.

When is the Durand Cup 2026 final?

The final is scheduled for Sunday, August 23, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

The official Durand Cup schedule lists the final at the same venue where the tournament began. The 135th edition features 24 teams and 43 matches across five host cities.

The exact final kickoff time was not listed on the official tournament fixture page at the time of verification.

For Mohun Bagan, the target is an 18th Durand Cup crown. East Bengal, meanwhile, will be seeking a 17th title and the chance to close the gap on their city rivals.

The final will bring the 2026 competition to a close after nearly a month of matches across Kolkata, Shillong, Ranchi, Imphal and Guwahati.
