UP Water Tank Tragedy: 4 Students Die After Suspected Toxic Gas Exposure in Vrindavan

1

VRINDAVAN: Four students died after entering an underground water tank at Maharshi Panini Sanskrit Gurukulam in Chaitanya Vihar, Mathura, late Tuesday night, October 6. A fifth student survived and was taken to a higher medical centre. Police and district officials are investigating how the students entered the tank and whether safety failures contributed to the incident.

The UP Water Tank Tragedy occurred after a foul smell was detected from the tank. According to NDTV, five students entered the roughly 10-to-12-foot-deep tank. One went in first and failed to return, after which four others entered in an attempt to help him.

What Happened Inside The Water Tank

Officials suspect Toxic Gas had accumulated inside the underground tank, causing the students to lose consciousness. The exact substance responsible has not been publicly established, and authorities have not treated the suspected gas as the final confirmed cause of death.

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the students were pulled out and taken to hospital. Four were declared dead, while the surviving student remained conscious and was referred for closer medical monitoring.

The deceased were identified as Manu Katare, Devansh Sharma, Aryan Pandey and Vishu Sharma. Their ages were reported as 20, 17, 17 and 18 respectively in reports citing officials.

Investigation Begins After Four Student Deaths

District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh reached the site and said a detailed investigation would examine how the accident happened and who was responsible for running the institution.

Police are also examining CCTV footage from the premises and contacting the victims’ families. The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events, including why students entered the underground tank.

The incident has raised questions about safety arrangements at residential educational institutions, particularly when students are involved in maintenance work around confined spaces.

Yogi Adityanath Expresses Grief

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths and said assistance would be provided to the bereaved families. His response came as district officials continued examining the circumstances behind the UP Water Tank Tragedy.

The chief minister has previously issued condolences after deaths in serious incidents in Uttar Pradesh, including the death of BJP MLA Chhote Lal Verma. His earlier response to that death was reported in a September account of the MLA’s death.

The latest incident has renewed attention on the need for supervision when hazardous areas such as underground tanks are being cleaned or inspected. Toxic Gas exposure can be fatal in a confined space, making the circumstances of this accident a key part of the ongoing investigation.

What Happens Next

The surviving student is receiving medical care, while the bodies of the four victims have been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said further action will depend on the investigation and any formal complaints filed by the families.

Authorities have not yet publicly established negligence or assigned criminal responsibility. Those questions remain under investigation as officials reconstruct what happened inside the tank.
