NEW DELHI: Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘Sting’ Moment Grabs Attention Amid PepsiCo Court Battle

1

NEW DELHI: A bottle of Sting unexpectedly became part of Tuesday’s political drama after Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were seen sharing the PepsiCo beverage during their protest near Akashvani Bhawan. The moment came as the Rahul Gandhi Protest against the Election Commission turned into a prolonged standoff with police.

The unusual scene quickly attracted attention because PepsiCo was simultaneously involved in a legal dispute with India’s food regulator over the use of the term “energy drink” on beverage labels.

Rahul Gandhi Protest Takes An Unexpected Turn

The Rahul Gandhi Protest began as an INDIA bloc march from Parliament Street towards the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi. Opposition leaders were demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Police stopped the march near the Election Commission premises, after which several opposition leaders were detained. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, however, remained at Akashvani Bhawan and continued the demonstration.

The confrontation lasted for hours before police eventually removed and detained the protesting leaders. An FIR was subsequently registered over the alleged unauthorised entry into the Akashvani Bhawan premises.

The Sting Moment Goes Viral

During the lengthy sit-in, Rahul Gandhi was seen drinking from a bottle of Sting after eating a roll. He later offered the drink to Priyanka Gandhi, who appeared hesitant, inspected the bottle and eventually took a sip.

The moment was captured on video and quickly circulated online. According to NDTV, the drink was Sting, a PepsiCo product marketed as an energy drink, creating an unusual connection between the street protest and a separate legal dispute taking place in Delhi.

The timing was particularly striking because the Rahul Gandhi Protest occurred on the same day that the Delhi High Court granted PepsiCo interim relief in its dispute with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India over the “energy drink” description.

Why PepsiCo Was In Court

The PepsiCo case concerns restrictions imposed by FSSAI on the use of the term “energy drink” on certain products. Under the interim arrangement reported on Tuesday, existing stocks carrying the disputed label can continue to be sold, while new products cannot be manufactured using that description as the legal proceedings continue.

The dispute has attracted attention because it concerns how caffeinated beverages are described and marketed to consumers.

For the INDIA Bloc, however, the PepsiCo case was separate from the political demonstration. The main protest remained focused on the Election Commission, electoral-roll revision and demands directed at the poll panel.

Protest Ends After Hours Of Standoff

The INDIA Bloc demonstration eventually ended after police intervened and detained the remaining protesters, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

The Sting episode became one of the most widely noticed moments from an otherwise serious political confrontation. It also created an unusual coincidence: while the Gandhis were drinking a PepsiCo product during the protest, the company was simultaneously fighting a court battle over the very category under which that beverage is marketed.
