Sourav Ganguly Takes Charge: Delhi Capitals Name India Great as Head Coach for IPL 2027
NEW DELHI: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed Delhi Capitals Head Coach for the upcoming IPL 2027 season, the franchise announced on October 6. The move brings Ganguly back into a frontline role with the Capitals after years of involvement with the franchise and marks his first appointment as an IPL head coach.
Ganguly Returns To Delhi Capitals In A New Role
The appointment gives Sourav Ganguly a new responsibility within a franchise he has known since 2019, when he joined as an advisor. He later served in senior cricket leadership positions, including Director of Cricket for the men’s and women’s teams.
Now, the former India captain will take direct charge of the coaching role. He replaces Hemang Badani, who had been in charge for the previous two seasons.
The decision comes as Delhi prepare for another IPL 2027 campaign and look to build a team capable of competing for their first IPL title.
Sourav Ganguly Targets A Stronger Delhi Side
Speaking after his appointment, Sourav Ganguly said he was looking forward to taking on the IPL head coach role and described Delhi Capitals as a franchise close to his heart.
He also said his focus would be on building a strong and fearless team. Ganguly has already worked closely with the franchise’s owners, management, support staff and players during his previous roles.
The Delhi Capitals Head Coach appointment therefore represents a continuation of an existing relationship rather than a completely new association.
Ganguly’s coaching experience also extends beyond the IPL. He has previously worked as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 competition, giving him recent experience in a franchise-based T20 environment.
Delhi Capitals Begin A New IPL 2027 Era
The change comes after Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the 2026 IPL season. The franchise will now enter its IPL 2027 preparations with Ganguly leading the coaching setup.
Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed the appointment, describing Ganguly as an integral part of the franchise’s family and expressing confidence in his leadership.
For the Delhi Capitals Head Coach, the immediate task will be to work with the squad, management and support staff ahead of the new season and shape the team’s approach for the campaign.
The appointment also adds another major former India captain to the growing list of high-profile figures taking coaching responsibilities in franchise cricket.
Ganguly Faces First IPL Head Coach Challenge
Although Ganguly has held several senior cricket administration and leadership positions, IPL 2027 will give him his first opportunity to serve as an IPL head coach.
That makes the move significant for both Ganguly and Delhi Capitals. His experience as a player, administrator and franchise cricket executive will now be tested in a role where results will ultimately determine the success of the appointment.
The Delhi Capitals Head Coach will have the opportunity to shape the team’s preparation and strategy as the franchise begins its push for the IPL title.
