2026 Mahindra Thar OG Price, Features, Engines and Delivery Date
Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the Thar OG, the latest version of its three-door lifestyle SUV, in India at an introductory price of ₹10.32 lakh ex-showroom. The updated model brings substantial mechanical changes beneath the familiar Thar shape, including a new platform, revised suspension, electric power steering, and more powerful petrol and diesel engines.
The company announced the launch on September 22, 2026, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin on October 11. The introductory prices are valid for deliveries made until November 30, according to Mahindra.
The Thar OG succeeds the three-door Thar introduced in 2020. Rather than being a cosmetic refresh alone, Mahindra has made changes to the SUV’s chassis, suspension, steering, powertrains, and off-road systems while retaining its three-door layout and familiar boxy design.
2026 Thar OG price and variants
The Thar OG range starts at ₹10.32 lakh for the AXT variant with the 1.5-litre diesel engine, six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.
The LXT variant starts at ₹12.99 lakh, while the ZXT range begins at ₹13.99 lakh. At the top of the launch range, the ZXT with the 2.2-litre diesel, automatic transmission and four-wheel drive is priced at ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom.
Mahindra is offering the Thar OG with three engines: a 1.5-litre diesel, a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. Depending on the variant, buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, while six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available across applicable powertrains.

New platform and revised suspension
One of the biggest changes is underneath the body. The Thar OG moves to Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform, which the company says offers greater stiffness than the outgoing architecture.
The SUV also gets a revised rear suspension incorporating a PENTALINK setup with Watts Link, along with Mahindra’s DAVINCI Damping technology and frequency-dependent damping. Mahindra says the changes are aimed at improving ride quality, handling and stability without compromising the vehicle’s off-road capability.
Electric power steering is another notable addition. The previous Thar used hydraulic power steering. The move to electric assistance is intended to make low-speed manoeuvring and parking easier, while the wider track and suspension changes address the SUV’s on-road behaviour.
Mahindra has also worked on cabin noise, vibration and harshness levels as part of the update.
More power from the petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines
The Thar OG retains three engine options, but two receive power increases.
The 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol now produces 119 kW, or about 162 hp, and 330 Nm. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel develops 111.9 kW, or about 152 hp, and 330 Nm.
The entry-level 1.5-litre diesel continues with 87.2 kW, or about 119 hp, and 300 Nm.
The 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel are available with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, depending on the variant. The 1.5-litre diesel is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.
Electronic locking differential and terrain modes
Mahindra has added an Electronic Locking Differential to the Thar OG’s four-wheel-drive variants. The system is designed to improve traction when wheel slip occurs.
The SUV also gets Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes on applicable 4WD versions. These systems are intended to adjust the vehicle’s behaviour for different surfaces and off-road conditions.
The changes are significant because the Thar’s appeal has traditionally centred on its off-road capability, while the latest update also places greater emphasis on everyday driving refinement.
Exterior changes keep the Thar’s familiar shape
Visually, Mahindra has retained the three-door Thar’s upright proportions and distinctive silhouette rather than redesigning the SUV from scratch.
The Thar OG receives a redesigned grille, circular LED headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights, LED fog lamps with a cornering function, and revised front and rear bumpers. Higher variants get new 19-inch alloy wheels, while the track has also been widened.
Two new exterior colours — Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue — join the existing colour palette.
Inside, Mahindra has introduced Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery and a softer second-row armrest with cupholders. Higher variants also get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control and additional convenience equipment.
Safety equipment gets an upgrade
Safety equipment has also been expanded, although availability differs by variant.
The top-spec ZXT gets six airbags, including four HPTS airbags covering the head, pelvis, thorax and shoulder areas for front and rear occupants. It also receives four-wheel disc brakes, tyre-pressure monitoring, a rear-view camera and front parking sensors.
The Thar OG also gets an ESP 9.3 system incorporating features such as rollover mitigation, traction control, hill-hold control and vehicle dynamics control.
The availability of six airbags and other safety equipment should therefore be checked against the specific variant rather than assumed across the entire range.
What Mahindra says about the Thar OG
Mahindra’s automotive business president, Dr Velusamy R, said the company focused on improving the three-door Thar’s on-road characteristics while retaining its off-road ability.
“With the Thar OG, we have elevated the iconic three-door Thar through significant advances in on-road refinement and off-road capability,” he said.
Mahindra’s chief design and creative officer, Pratap Bose, said the company retained the SUV’s established proportions and silhouette while updating the front-end design, lighting and wheels.
Deliveries begin in October
The 2026 Mahindra Thar OG is now officially on sale in India, with deliveries scheduled to start October 11, 2026.
The launch gives the three-door Thar a substantially revised mechanical package while keeping its core design and body format intact. For buyers considering the SUV, the key differences between variants are not limited to cosmetic equipment: engine, drivetrain, off-road hardware, and safety features vary considerably across the AXT, LXT, and ZXT versions.
The introductory pricing is applicable to deliveries made through November 30, after which Mahindra may revise the prices.
