CM Vijay Gold Scheme Launches In Madurai, Offering 22-Carat Gold Rings To Newborns

MADURAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday launched the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam at Government Rajaji Hospital, beginning a statewide programme under which eligible newborns delivered at government health institutions will receive one-gram, 22-carat gold rings.

The CM Vijay gold scheme fulfils a prominent election commitment of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government. The Tamil Nadu newborn scheme began its public rollout in Madurai on September 28, while the latest Joseph Vijay news centres on the first large-scale distribution of the rings and the rules that will govern eligibility across the state.

Gold Ring Scheme Launches In Madurai

According to The Indian Express, Vijay presented rings to 27 infants during the launch at Rajaji Government Hospital. Three babies received the rings on stage, followed by further distribution in the maternity ward. The scheme has an annual allocation of ₹755.83 crore, and 1.28 lakh rings have been procured for the first phase.

The rings are one gram in weight and 22 carat in purity. Each will carry a unique serial number and be supplied in tamper-proof packaging, allowing officials to track inventory during distribution.

Who Is Eligible For The Tamil Nadu Newborn Scheme

The Tamil Nadu newborn scheme applies retrospectively to eligible babies born alive in government hospitals and primary health centres from June 22, 2026. Both boys and girls qualify. The mother must be a Tamil Nadu resident and registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation, or PICME, system, with a Reproductive and Child Health ID.

Hospital authorities will verify delivery records, PICME registration, the RCH ID and the mother’s residency before handing over the ring. No separate application is required, according to the reported implementation details.

The CM Vijay gold scheme is therefore tied directly to births in government health facilities. The state has also formed district-level committees headed by Collectors to supervise implementation, monitor inventories and oversee distribution.

Why The Scheme Was Introduced

The government has said the initiative is intended to honour newborn children, recognise motherhood and encourage families to use public healthcare facilities for childbirth. Its name refers to the traditional Tamil role of the thaimaaman, or maternal uncle, in presenting gifts to a sister’s child.

The programme was first announced by Vijay in his Independence Day address on August 15 and was originally scheduled to begin on September 15. The launch was subsequently shifted to September 28.

Recent Joseph Vijay news has focused on the government’s early policy rollout since the 2026 Assembly election. Earlier this month, coverage of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Assembly confrontation documented another stage of the administration’s political activity.

Rollout And Monitoring

The first phase is now moving from procurement to distribution across government healthcare institutions. The latest Joseph Vijay news also includes the state’s efforts to standardise packaging, serial numbering and district-level monitoring as the scheme expands.

For eligible families, the CM Vijay gold scheme does not require a separate application. The ring is to be handed over at discharge after hospital officials complete the required verification.

The Tamil Nadu newborn scheme has also prompted debate about the cultural framing of welfare, with critics cited by The Indian Express questioning the symbolism of presenting a state benefit through a maternal-uncle tradition. The government, however, has described the scheme as part of its maternal and child health welfare measures.
