Mumbai Metro Line 4 Accident: Two Workers Killed In Wadala Construction Collapse
MUMBAI: Two construction workers were killed at a Mumbai Metro Line 4 construction site in Wadala after iron staging collapsed while they were using it to descend from the first floor. The incident occurred on September 12, but the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing the project, had not publicly disclosed it for five days.
Two Workers Killed At Wadala Site
The workers were at a construction site associated with Bhakti Park station when the staging they were using gave way. Both workers died in the incident.
The Wadala construction collapse occurred on September 12, while an FIR was registered by Wadala TT police on Tuesday, according to the latest report by the Indian Express.
The police case is now part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including the construction arrangements at the site.
Mumbai Metro Line 4 Accident Raises Safety Questions
The Mumbai Metro Line 4 accident is significant because the same corridor experienced another fatal construction incident earlier this year.
In February, a portion of an under-construction Metro Line 4 structure collapsed on LBS Road in Mulund. One person was killed and three others were injured in that incident. A subsequent report identified it as one of several accidents recorded at Mumbai Metro construction sites in recent years.
The two incidents have increased scrutiny of safety practices on the 32.32-kilometre elevated corridor, which is planned to connect Wadala with Kasarvadavali in Thane.
Same Construction Team Involved In Earlier Fatal Incident
The latest reporting also indicates that the contractor, subcontractor and consultant involved in the February Mulund incident were also associated with construction work at the Bhakti Park station site where the two workers died.
That connection is likely to draw further attention as investigators examine whether adequate safety procedures were followed at the Wadala site.
The Wadala construction collapse has also renewed concerns over worker protection at major urban infrastructure projects, where construction activity frequently takes place alongside densely populated areas and active transport corridors.
Investigation Underway Into Construction Safety
The police investigation will be important in establishing the immediate cause of the staging failure and determining whether any safety requirements were breached.
The latest Mumbai Metro Line 4 accident also comes as authorities face renewed pressure to strengthen monitoring of construction sites and ensure that contractors comply with workplace safety requirements.
Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, is designed as a 32.32-kilometre elevated corridor with 30 stations between Wadala and Kasarvadavali. Its construction has involved multiple major engineering works across Mumbai and Thane.
The latest deaths have placed renewed focus on whether safety checks, supervision and worker-protection measures are being consistently enforced across the project.
