Asian Games 2026 India Squad: Sports Ministry Clears 503 Athletes for Japan
AICHI-NAGOYA, JAPAN: India will send a 503-athlete contingent to the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, with the Asian Games 2026 India squad comprising 269 men and 234 women across 36 disciplines. The Games officially begin on September 19 and run through October 4.
The final athlete strength is higher than the 492 approved initially in August. Four surfers, six track and field athletes and one mixed martial arts athlete were subsequently added, taking the total to 503. The Sports ministry contingent also includes 265 accompanying personnel, according to the latest details from Indian sporting authorities.
Asian Games 2026 India Squad Expands Before Opening
The increase means the Asian Games 2026 India squad will cover a broad programme ranging from athletics, shooting and boxing to hockey, wrestling, badminton, cricket, kabaddi and newer disciplines.
India will compete across 36 sports, while the wider Asian Games programme features 43 sports. The event is being hosted across the Aichi-Nagoya region and marks Japan’s third time hosting the continental Games.
The expanded selection comes after India recorded its best-ever Asian Games medal haul in Hangzhou in 2023, winning 107 medals. The Indian contingent will now attempt to build on that performance in Japan.
Sports Ministry Contingent Gets Final Additions
The Sports ministry contingent was formally presented ahead of the Games, with Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya expressing confidence in India’s athletes.
At a September 8 send-off ceremony, Mandaviya said he had “complete faith” in the contingent and urged athletes to turn pressure into performance. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has separately published details confirming India’s participation from September 19 to October 4.
The delegation includes 246 coaches and support staff, along with 19 Indian Olympic Association officials, bringing the broader contingent to 768 people.
India At Asian Games Targets Strong Medal Campaign
The India at Asian Games campaign will feature several defending champions and established medal contenders. India’s cricket teams will defend their men’s and women’s gold medals, while hockey, shooting, athletics, wrestling and badminton are among the other sports attracting significant attention.
India’s Asian Games cricket teams will enter the tournament as defending champions in both men’s and women’s cricket.
For India at Asian Games, the expanded squad provides opportunities across both established Olympic sports and newer disciplines. The final team size is smaller than India’s record 661-athlete contingent at Hangzhou, but it still represents one of the country’s largest overseas multi-sport delegations.
With the opening ceremony approaching, the Asian Games 2026 India squad is now in place for the country’s campaign in Japan. The focus will shift from selection and preparation to competition as Indian athletes begin their medal pursuit.
