TMC Attack Kolkata: TMC Alleges Attack On Upasana And Humayun Kabir
KOLKATA: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction has alleged that BJP workers attacked its IT cell head Upasana Chowdhury and former MLA Humayun Kabir during clashes in Mukundapur on Tuesday evening, September 22. The BJP has denied the allegations and said TMC supporters attacked a BJP worker who was recording the protest.
The TMC attack Kolkata allegations followed a TMC procession from Mukund Bhavan towards Purba Jadavpur police station. The party said its workers were taking a memorandum to authorities over alleged attacks and vandalism involving party offices in the Jadavpur area.
TMC Attack Kolkata Claims Centre On Upasana
Upasana Chowdhury alleged that she was assaulted outside her residence and that eggs were thrown at her. She also alleged that family members were attacked when they intervened and that the front and rear windshields of her car were damaged. The allegations have not been independently established.
The New Indian Express reported that the BJP rejected the allegations and offered a different account of how the confrontation began, saying a BJP worker who was filming the procession was allegedly confronted and attacked by TMC supporters.
Derek O Brien Posts Images After Clashes
Rajya Sabha MP Derek O Brien criticised the alleged attacks in posts on X, saying Upasana’s residence had been targeted and her car vandalised. He also alleged that TMC workers in Wards 78 and 109 were attacked and accused police of failing to act.
Those statements are allegations from a political party and its leaders. They should be distinguished from facts independently established by police or investigators.
Humayun Kabir Alleges Assault Outside Police Station
Former TMC MLA and former IPS officer Humayun Kabir alleged that he was assaulted by BJP workers while trying to reach Purba Jadavpur police station after the clashes. In a Facebook video, Kabir appeared with blood on his face and a torn shirt and alleged that the assault took place in front of police personnel.
The BJP denied responsibility for the alleged assault and maintained that TMC workers had attacked its supporter during the wider confrontation. Police intervened after the situation escalated and used force to separate the rival groups, according to reports.
West Bengal Political Violence Debate Intensifies
The clash comes amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the October 6 bypolls in Rejinagar and Nandigram. The recent withdrawal of candidates backed by the Mamata Banerjee-led faction has added further political attention around the contests.
The latest confrontation has added another episode to the wider West Bengal political violence debate, but responsibility for individual acts during the Mukundapur clashes remains disputed.
For Derek O Brien, the incident reflects attacks on TMC workers and alleged police inaction. The BJP’s position is that the violence followed an attack by TMC supporters on its worker. A definitive account will depend on the police investigation and any subsequent legal findings.
What Is Confirmed So Far
The confirmed picture is that TMC and BJP supporters clashed in Mukundapur on Tuesday, several people were injured and police intervened. Upasana Chowdhury and Humayun Kabir have publicly alleged that they were attacked, while the BJP has denied responsibility and provided a conflicting account of the confrontation.
As the TMC attack Kolkata dispute develops, further police statements, complaints or legal action may clarify what happened. The West Bengal political violence issue remains contested, and allegations from either side should not be treated as established facts without independent verification.
