Bank Strike Update: Nationwide September 28–30 Strike Deferred After UFBU-IBA Talks

1

NEW DELHI: The proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled for September 28 to 30 has been deferred after the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) reached an understanding during late-night talks on September 27. The decision means bank branches were expected to operate normally instead of closing for the planned three-day agitation.

The latest bank strike update came after an IBA-UFBU meeting that began at around 9:30 pm on Sunday. The agreement does not settle the unions’ demands. Instead, it moves the dispute into another round of negotiations.

Why Was The Bank Strike Deferred?

The central issue was the unions’ demand for a five-day banking week, which would make all Saturdays holidays along with Sundays. Banks currently observe holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays, while other Saturdays are generally working days.

The United Forum of Bank Unions said a high-level committee comprising representatives from the IBA and UFBU will be formed immediately to examine the demand for declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays.

The committee will consider possible alternatives, consult stakeholders and seek a solution acceptable to all parties, including bank customers. The bank strike update therefore represents a postponement of the agitation rather than a final settlement.

What Did The IBA And UFBU Agree On?

The understanding reached between the two sides covers several pending issues. Alongside the five-day banking demand, discussions are expected to continue on the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and other matters raised by bank employee and officer unions.

According to Times of India, the UFBU announced the deferment through a circular issued on September 27 after the meeting with the IBA.

The Indian Banks Association and the United Forum of Bank Unions will now participate in the committee process, with the objective of examining the remaining Saturday holidays and possible alternatives before a final position is reached.

What Does The Decision Mean For Bank Customers?

For customers, the immediate effect is that the scheduled nationwide shutdown from September 28 to 30 was no longer expected to take place. Branch services therefore continued instead of facing the disruption that had been anticipated during the proposed strike.

The development is particularly significant because the planned action would have coincided with the half-yearly closing period for banks, potentially creating additional pressure on branch operations and customer-facing services.

Customers should still check individual branch schedules for any separate holiday or local closure. Earlier banking coverage has also highlighted how bank holiday schedules can differ by location.

Strike Deferred, Five-Day Banking Still Unresolved

The latest bank strike update should not be interpreted as confirmation that five-day banking has been approved. The demand remains under discussion, and the newly proposed committee is expected to examine the issue before further decisions are taken.

The United Forum of Bank Unions has therefore paused its planned September 28–30 action while negotiations continue. The Indian Banks Association will now be part of the committee process, leaving the final outcome on five-day banking unresolved.
