Greater Noida Thar Crash Kills Lawyer, Wife Critically Injured
A 40-year-old Supreme Court lawyer died after a Mahindra Thar collided with the scooter he was riding with his wife in Greater Noida on Monday evening. His wife, Nishi, is undergoing treatment in intensive care after suffering multiple fractures and serious injuries in the crash.
The couple was travelling through the Bisrakh area when the collision occurred near Itera in Greater Noida West. The Thar was abandoned at the scene, and its driver fled, according to police and multiple reports. The vehicle has since been taken into police custody.
Lawyer dies after collision
The deceased has been identified as Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Chipiyana village in the Bisrakh area. He was 40 and practised law at the Supreme Court, according to reports published after the accident.
Police said Neeraj and his wife were travelling on a scooter when it was struck by the Thar. The impact threw the couple from the scooter and left both seriously injured.
They were taken to hospital for treatment. Neeraj later died from his injuries during treatment.
His wife, Nishi, survived the initial impact but remains in critical condition. NDTV reported on Tuesday that she is being treated at Fortis Hospital in Noida’s Sector 62 and is in a coma. The report said she has suffered multiple fractures and that the right side of her body is paralysed.
The couple had married earlier this year
The latest report has also brought details of the couple’s personal circumstances to light.
According to NDTV, Neeraj and Nishi married on March 9 this year. Nishi works as a teacher at First Step School.
On Monday, Neeraj had returned home early from court. Nishi later called him after her school finished and asked him to pick her up, according to the report. The two were travelling home together when the crash occurred.
The account has not been independently supplemented by a statement from the family or hospital in the reports reviewed for this article.
Thar driver remains untraced
The Thar driver did not remain at the scene after the collision. Police seized the SUV and began efforts to identify and locate the person who was driving it.
Reports identify the Thar as bearing registration number UP 14 GB 7267. The scooter involved in the collision was reported as UP 16 EE 2569.
Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the circumstances of the collision and trace the driver.
The Times of India reported on September 22 that the driver remained untraceable. It also reported that relatives of the injured woman were facing medical bills running into several lakh rupees.
Claims about the occupants remain unverified
Some local accounts have claimed that four young men were travelling in the Thar and suggested that they may have been under the influence of alcohol.
That claim has not been independently established.
The Times of India specifically noted that the allegation had not been verified and said police were expected to examine CCTV footage and other evidence to determine how the collision occurred and whether the SUV was being driven rashly or negligently.
That distinction is important because the available reporting establishes the collision, the death of Neeraj, the serious injuries suffered by his wife and the driver’s flight from the scene. It does not, on the evidence currently available, establish the driver’s speed, sobriety or the precise cause of the crash.
Family faces medical expenses as investigation continues
With Nishi still receiving critical care, her family is also dealing with substantial treatment costs.
The Times of India reported that her relatives had already incurred medical expenses running into several lakh rupees. No independently verified total for her treatment costs has been released publicly.
The police investigation remains focused on establishing exactly how the collision happened and locating the driver. CCTV footage and other available evidence are expected to form part of that investigation.
For now, the most immediate concern for the family is Nishi’s condition. The accident has left one member of the newly married couple dead and the other fighting serious injuries in hospital.
The driver involved in the crash had not been traced in the latest reports reviewed for this article.
