Rain Adds Uncertainty to India-Japan Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinal
India’s women’s cricket team is scheduled to begin its Asian Games 2026 campaign against hosts Japan in the fourth quarterfinal at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Friday, September 18.
The match is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. IST (2 p.m. local time). As of the latest available match information, the game has not yet begun, so there is no live score to report.
Weather, however, is a significant part of the build-up. Rain already affected the women’s cricket competition at the same venue on Thursday, when China’s quarterfinal against Bangladesh was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Bangladesh advanced under the competition’s ranking-based provision for a washed-out quarterfinal.
Will rain affect India vs Japan?
There is a risk of weather interruptions, but the available forecasts do not indicate that a complete washout is certain.
The latest forecast for Nisshin points to generally cloudy conditions during the daytime, with a greater possibility of rain later in the day. A local forecast issued on Friday morning put the day’s precipitation probability at about 30%, while the Japan Meteorological Agency’s regional forecast described Aichi as generally cloudy, with rain more likely from the evening.
That timing could be significant because India and Japan are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. local time. Any rain before or during the match could still affect the playing surface, particularly given the problems experienced at Kōrogi Sports Park a day earlier.
The previous day also provided a warning about how quickly conditions can alter the schedule. China and Bangladesh were unable to start their quarterfinal after persistent rain left the outfield unplayable.
What happens if India vs Japan is washed out?
A washout would not automatically send the teams to a reserve day. Under the Asian Games cricket playing conditions, when a quarterfinal is abandoned without a result, the higher-ranked team advances.
That rule was applied on Thursday after Bangladesh and China could not play. Bangladesh progressed because it held the higher position in the relevant international rankings.
The same provision would benefit India against Japan. India is ranked third in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, while Japan is ranked 39th in the latest match information. If Friday’s quarterfinal produces no result, India would therefore advance to the semifinal under the tournament rules.
That would put India into Sunday’s semifinal against Bangladesh, which reached the last four without playing its quarterfinal.
India begin their title defence
India enter the Asian Games as the defending women’s cricket champions. Harmanpreet Kaur leads the side, with Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh among the established names in the squad.
India also arrive after winning the Women’s Asia Cup, giving the team a recent competitive run before the Asian Games knockout stage.
Japan, meanwhile, are playing at home and will face India for the first time in an international cricket match. Mai Yanagida is the Japanese captain.
The fixture is also Japan’s first match of the women’s cricket competition after receiving a direct place in the quarterfinals as the host nation.

The weather remains the key variable
The immediate question is not simply whether rain is forecast, but whether the ground can remain playable if showers arrive.
Thursday’s events showed the difficulty of recovering quickly from persistent rain at the venue. Pakistan’s quarterfinal against Thailand was also reduced because of weather, while China’s match was abandoned completely.
For India and Japan, even a shortened game would change the nature of the knockout contest. But if conditions prevent a result altogether, the tournament rules provide a clear route to the semifinal based on rankings.
For now, the match remains scheduled for 10:30 a.m. IST, with no confirmed postponement or cancellation.
