Sigma vs Thirupaachi: Jason Sanjay’s Film to Face Vijay-Trisha Re-Release
Jason Sanjay’s first film as a director is heading into an unusual release-weekend battle: his new film Sigma is scheduled for October 2, while his father Vijay’s 2005 film Thirupaachi, starring Trisha Krishnan, is also being brought back to theatres around the same period.
The timing has naturally drawn attention in Tamil cinema because Sigma marks Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut, while Thirupaachi represents one of Vijay’s better-known mass entertainers from the 2000s.
The two films are not new releases in the conventional sense. Sigma is a new theatrical film, whereas Thirupaachi is returning to the big screen more than two decades after its original release.
Sigma locks October 2 release
Sigma will mark Jason Sanjay’s debut as a feature-film director. The film stars Sundeep Kishan in the lead role, with Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee and others among the cast.
Lyca Productions announced the October 2 worldwide theatrical release in August after the film was moved from its earlier July 31 date.
The postponement followed changes to the release schedule of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, which eventually opened in theatres on July 23.
The film is being presented as a heist-oriented action-adventure, with music by Thaman S. Jason Sanjay has written and directed the project.
The October date also gives Sigma a festival-period release window around Gandhi Jayanti, traditionally an important period for theatrical releases in India.
Thirupaachi returns after more than 20 years
While Sigma is introducing Jason Sanjay as a filmmaker, Thirupaachi is returning with an established star pairing.
Directed by Perarasu, Thirupaachi originally released in January 2005 and featured Vijay and Trisha in the lead roles. Mallika played Vijay’s sister, while the cast also included Pasupathy, Manoj K. Jayan, and Kota Srinivasa Rao.
The film combined action with family sentiment, centering on Vijay’s character Sivagiri and his efforts to protect his sister after she moves to Chennai following her marriage.
The movie became an important commercial title in Vijay’s career and has remained familiar to his fan base.
The re-release is being handled by Thirupati Pictures, according to reports surrounding the announcement.
Why the timing is attracting attention
The release pairing is notable less because the two films are direct competitors in terms of content and more because of the names attached to them.
Sigma represents the arrival of Vijay’s son as a filmmaker. Thirupaachi, meanwhile, brings Vijay himself back to cinemas through an older title that also stars Trisha.
That gives Vijay fans two very different reasons to visit theatres during the same period: nostalgia for one of the actor’s earlier hits and curiosity about the first major directorial project from the next generation of his family.
There is also a recent history of strong interest in Vijay re-releases. His 2004 film Ghilli, which also starred Trisha, returned to cinemas in 2024 and attracted significant attention from fans.
That background makes the performance of Thirupaachi particularly interesting, although the commercial prospects of a re-release should not be directly compared with those of a brand-new theatrical film without considering screen allocation, ticket pricing and the number of shows.
The release date needs one clarification
Reports published in August had listed October 1 as the planned date for Thirupaachi’s re-release in Tamil Nadu. More recent reports, including coverage published on September 14, have listed October 2.
There has also been an industry social-media report suggesting that the Indian re-release may have been postponed while an overseas release could proceed as previously planned.
Because of those conflicting updates, the final Indian release schedule should be treated as subject to confirmation from the film’s distributor or other official release announcement.
What is clear is that Sigma has an announced October 2 theatrical date, while Thirupaachi is being actively positioned for a re-release in the same October window.
A different kind of Vijay-Sanjay release story
The situation also carries an interesting generational angle.
Vijay’s career in cinema ended with Jana Nayagan, while his son is now beginning his own filmmaking career. Jason Sanjay has previously spoken about the guidance he received from his father and about the need to establish an identity of his own.
At a recent Sigma event, lead actor Sundeep Kishan also acknowledged Vijay’s influence and thanked the actor and his fans for their support.
Jason, meanwhile, has publicly described his mother as the first person he called after officially becoming a director.
Those comments have added a personal layer to interest surrounding Sigma, but the film itself will ultimately be judged on its theatrical reception rather than its family connection.
What happens next
The immediate question is whether Thirupaachi retains its reported Indian release position alongside Sigma.
For Sigma, the October 2 date remains the key confirmed theatrical milestone announced by its makers.
For Thirupaachi, the re-release is confirmed in multiple reports, but the precise Indian date has been reported inconsistently. A final distributor confirmation would settle whether the two films actually open on the same day or merely occupy the same release window.
If both films do land in theatres at the same time, the contrast will be unusual: a new film directed by Vijay’s son facing a revived Vijay-Trisha blockbuster that has already built a fan base over two decades.
