iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max Debut With A20 Pro and AI Upgrades

CUPERTINO, California — Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Wednesday at its annual September event, putting its most expensive mainstream iPhone models at the center of the company’s 2026 hardware strategy.

The launch took place at Apple Park and marked the first major iPhone presentation led by John Ternus, who became Apple’s chief executive on September 1 after Tim Cook moved to the role of executive chairman. Apple had promoted the event as “Surprise and shine.” The company confirmed the event and its 10 a.m. Pacific start time on its official events page.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States, according to Reuters’ coverage of the launch. Apple positioned the new phones around three areas in particular: processing performance, cameras, and artificial intelligence.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max take the spotlight

Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max as the newest members of its flagship smartphone family.

The two models retain a design language broadly similar to the previous generation, but Apple has made changes internally and introduced new finishes. MarketWatch reported that the new Pro models are available in glacier and burgundy finishes and that Apple is claiming improvements in battery life, performance, camera capability and device intelligence.

The biggest technical change is Apple’s A20 Pro chip. Reuters reported that the processor is built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process and is designed to improve the ability of advanced AI models to run directly on the phone. Apple has also upgraded the phone’s vapor-based cooling system, using packaging techniques associated with its Mac chips.

That matters because Apple is increasingly presenting the iPhone as a device for running AI locally rather than relying entirely on cloud-based processing.

Apple puts AI and Siri at the center

Ternus used the presentation to emphasize Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence and privacy.

“That’s why Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever it can,” Ternus said during the presentation, according to Reuters.

Apple’s next-generation Siri also featured prominently. Lilian Rincon, who oversees Apple’s AI products, said the updated assistant would work with 300,000 apps at launch, Reuters reported.

The broader software foundation was previewed by Apple at WWDC26 in June. The company said its next-generation Apple Intelligence would bring a substantially more capable Siri, including personal-context understanding and systemwide actions across apps.

The iPhone 18 Pro launch therefore represents more than a routine processor upgrade. Apple is using its enormous installed base of iPhones to push AI deeper into everyday smartphone functions while keeping privacy as a central part of the pitch.

Camera and battery improvements

Apple also highlighted improvements to the camera system and battery performance.

MarketWatch reported that Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life per charge, while the Pro Max can reach up to 30 hours.

The camera system has also been upgraded, although some of the more detailed specifications circulating before launch came from leaks rather than Apple’s official announcements. Reports ahead of the event had pointed to a possible variable-aperture main camera and other photography improvements. Those earlier reports should not be treated as confirmed specifications unless Apple has explicitly announced them.

That distinction is particularly relevant for the standard iPhone 18, which had been the subject of extensive speculation before the event.

Where is the standard iPhone 18?

One of the biggest changes to Apple’s traditional launch pattern is what did not appear alongside the Pro models.

The standard iPhone 18 was widely expected to be delayed rather than launched at the September event. Reuters reported that Apple is shifting its release calendar toward the premium Pro models and is expected to hold back less expensive iPhone updates until the spring.

The change had been reported before Apple’s event. WIRED said the base iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air were expected to move to spring 2027, rather than arriving alongside the Pro models in September.

That makes this year’s launch materially different from Apple’s usual September strategy, in which consumers typically see a broader range of new iPhones at the same event.

Foldable iPhone adds another dimension

The iPhone 18 Pro launch also shares the stage with an even larger change to Apple’s smartphone business: the company’s entry into foldable phones.

Reuters reported that Apple was expected to introduce a high-priced folding iPhone during the event. The device would put Apple into direct competition with Samsung, Google and other manufacturers that entered the foldable market years earlier.

The foldable model is especially significant because Apple has historically entered emerging product categories later than some competitors, generally waiting until the technology is sufficiently mature.

The launch therefore gives Apple two different stories to tell: refinement of its established Pro iPhone range and entry into a smartphone category it has so far avoided.

What Indian buyers need to know

For Indian consumers, the September event began at 10:30 p.m. IST, as confirmed on Apple’s India website.

Indian pricing had been heavily speculated before the event, with estimates for the iPhone 18 Pro ranging around ₹1.4 lakh and the Pro Max around ₹1.59 lakh. Those figures appeared in pre-launch reports and should not be confused with officially confirmed Indian retail pricing unless Apple publishes the final figures.

The launch is also significant for India’s growing role in Apple’s manufacturing network. However, the immediate consumer question remains availability and final India pricing rather than the earlier estimates circulated before the keynote.

Apple’s new iPhone strategy

The iPhone remains Apple’s largest product business. Reuters reported that iPhone revenue reached $209.6 billion, or slightly more than half of Apple’s sales, in the company’s most recent fiscal year.

That decision to concentrate the September launch on higher-end devices more consequential than a simple scheduling change.

Apple is betting that customers willing to upgrade this fall will be attracted to the Pro models, while the company can introduce more affordable versions later. At the same time, the A20 Pro and expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities give Apple a stronger technical argument for upgrading existing users.

The company’s challenge will be persuading customers that the new capabilities are sufficiently useful to justify the premium prices, particularly as smartphone replacement cycles remain longer than they were several years ago.

For now, the confirmed headline is straightforward: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have arrived, while the standard iPhone 18 remains outside Apple’s September Pro launch. Further details on pricing, availability, and the rest of the 2026 iPhone family will determine how the new strategy plays out.
