Jaishankar UNGA Speech 2026: Pakistan Rebuttal Sharpens India’s Terrorism Stand as 4F Crisis Takes Centre Stage
NEW YORK: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar used the 81st United Nations General Assembly to defend India’s position on terrorism, respond sharply to a Pakistani journalist and warn that the global order is under growing pressure from conflicts and economic disruptions. His remarks came as India also highlighted the wider Global South 4F Crisis involving fuel, food, fertiliser and finance.
Jaishankar UNGA Speech 2026 Highlights India’s Terrorism Position
The Jaishankar UNGA Speech 2026 on September 26 came after several days of diplomatic engagements in New York. Addressing the General Debate, Jaishankar said countries far from conflicts were also being affected by wars and called for restraint, civilian protection and the uninterrupted flow of energy and commerce.
India’s position on terrorism was also prominent during Jaishankar’s UN engagements. At a media interaction on September 25, a Pakistani journalist questioned India over allegations that New Delhi sponsors terrorism in Pakistan.
Jaishankar responded: “A terrorist country is asking me that question?” The exchange occurred after a briefing with Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti on the safety and security of shipping and seafarers, according to NDTV.
Jaishankar Pakistan Rebuttal Comes Amid Continuing Tensions
The Jaishankar Pakistan Rebuttal reflects India’s longstanding position that terrorism and normal bilateral relations cannot proceed together. India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, while Islamabad rejects such allegations and has itself accused India of supporting militant activity inside Pakistan.
The latest exchange came against the backdrop of continuing tensions between the two countries. Jaishankar and Indian officials have repeatedly raised terrorism at international forums, while Pakistan has disputed India’s characterisation of the issue.
The minister’s response quickly drew attention online, with video clips of the exchange circulating widely after the UN interaction.
Global South 4F Crisis Raises Economic Concerns
Jaishankar’s UNGA engagements also focused on issues extending beyond India-Pakistan relations. At the inaugural Partners for Multilateralism Summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he highlighted what he described as the “4F” crisis: fuel, food, fertiliser and finance.
He argued that these pressures cannot be left unresolved and called for stronger international frameworks and “guardrails” to deal with emerging risks. He also advocated reducing dependence on vulnerable supply routes through de-risking and diversification.
The Global South 4F Crisis has particular significance for developing economies because disruptions in energy, food supplies, fertiliser availability and access to finance can affect economic stability and development.
India Pushes For Reformed Multilateralism
Jaishankar also called for greater participation and transparency in international decision-making. He argued that multilateral institutions must reflect present-day realities and said international law, rules and norms need to be respected.
The Jaishankar UNGA Speech 2026 therefore combined India’s security concerns with a broader economic and diplomatic message. His Jaishankar Pakistan Rebuttal dominated much of the immediate attention, but the minister’s wider UN engagements placed India’s position within a broader call for cooperation, supply-chain resilience and stronger multilateral institutions.
The 81st UN General Assembly’s General Debate is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
