Guwahati Murder Case: Man Accused of Killing Wife Urges People Not to Repeat His “Mistake”
GUWAHATI: Ramanuj Goswami, the man accused of killing his 25-year-old wife Riya Talukdar in Guwahati, has changed his tone after earlier making aggressive remarks about a man he described as his wife’s “sugar daddy.”
While being taken for a medical check-up, Goswami told reporters that he accepted responsibility for what he had done and urged others not to repeat his actions.
“I am accepting my faults. People can say bad things about me. But I request everyone not to make this kind of mistake in their life,” he said, according to NDTV.
The remarks came days after police arrested Goswami in connection with the killing and recovered Talukdar’s severed head from a refrigerator inside the couple’s Guwahati apartment.
Police reconstruct the crime scene
The case came to light on September 6 after neighbours reported a foul smell coming from the apartment and raised concerns because the couple had not been seen for about two days.
Police entered the residence and found Talukdar’s partially decomposed body. Investigators said her head was missing and was later recovered from a refrigerator inside the apartment, wrapped in a polythene bag. Her fingers had also reportedly been partially cut.
Police have alleged that the killing followed an argument between the couple on September 3. Goswami was subsequently arrested after surrendering to police.
The police investigation is examining what happened inside the apartment and the circumstances that led to the killing. Investigators have also been examining Goswami’s claims about an alleged extramarital relationship involving his wife. That allegation has not been independently established.
On September 9, police took Goswami back to the residence as part of a reconstruction of the crime scene. The exercise was conducted in the presence of a magistrate, according to NDTV, and proceedings were recorded.
Investigators seized the refrigerator in which the victim’s head had allegedly been kept, along with a sharp weapon, scissors, clothes and other material that could help establish the sequence of events.
Earlier remarks about a “sugar daddy”
Goswami’s latest comments mark a notable change from statements he made earlier in the investigation.
On September 8, while being taken to court, he told reporters that after serving his jail sentence, he would kill the person he referred to as his wife’s “sugar daddy.” He also said he had “no regrets” and offered no apology for the killing, according to NDTV.
Police have been trying to establish the identity of the man Goswami referred to and determine whether that claim has any relevance to the motive for the killing.
The alleged affair remains an allegation made by the accused and has not been independently confirmed. Police are continuing to question him as they reconstruct the events surrounding Talukdar’s death.

What police have established so far
Talukdar, 25, was identified as the victim. Her husband, variously identified in reports as Ramanuj or Ramanujan Goswami, is the principal accused in the case.
Reports from the early stages of the investigation said the couple had married in September 2025 and were living together in the Guwahati area. Talukdar had reportedly worked at a boutique, while Goswami was described in police and media reports as a cab or taxi driver.
Police have also seized a sharp weapon suspected of being connected to the crime. The recovered material is expected to undergo forensic examination as investigators work to establish the sequence of events.
Goswami was remanded to seven days of police custody after being produced before a court. Investigators are using the custody period to question him and reconstruct what happened at the apartment.
Investigation remains underway
The investigation has not established every aspect of the alleged motive.
In particular, police are still examining Goswami’s allegations concerning his wife’s purported relationship with another man. His public statements about the alleged “sugar daddy” are also being examined as part of the broader investigation.
The latest police action — returning the accused to the apartment and seizing the refrigerator and other items — suggests investigators are still gathering physical and forensic evidence rather than treating the case as fully resolved.
For now, the central facts are that Riya Talukdar was found dead in the Guwahati apartment, her severed head was recovered from a refrigerator, and her husband has been arrested and accused in the case. The investigation into the exact sequence of events and motive continues.
