A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district allegedly threw acid at his former fiancée and her sister after their family called off his proposed marriage, police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Harsh Bhati, was taken into custody after the victims’ family members caught him as he allegedly tried to flee from the house. The two sisters were seriously injured and admitted to a hospital, where they are receiving treatment, according to police and reports citing the victims’ family.
The incident took place on Saturday night in the area under Simbhawali police station in Hapur district.
Family called off marriage after alleged drug addiction
According to the father of the two women, his daughter’s marriage had been arranged with Bhati. The family later decided to cancel the alliance after allegedly learning that he was addicted to drugs.
The allegation about drug addiction comes from the victims’ family and is not independently established in the police statements available so far.
The family alleged in its complaint that Bhati arrived at the young woman’s home on Saturday night carrying acid. When the door was opened, he allegedly threw the substance at his former fiancée.
Her sister attempted to intervene, following which Bhati allegedly attacked her as well, the family told police. Their screams alerted other family members, who caught the accused while he was attempting to escape and handed him over to the police.
Police register case
Personnel from Simbhawali police station subsequently reached the location and took Bhati into custody.
Circle Officer Rahul Yadav said a case had been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the victims’ family. He also said the accused was being questioned.
The reports available so far do not provide the FIR number or specify all the sections of law invoked against Bhati. Police have also not publicly disclosed the extent of the women’s injuries beyond describing them as serious.
The two sisters remain under treatment at a hospital, according to the reports.
What is known about the attack
The account currently available from police and the victims’ family establishes the broad sequence of events: the marriage proposal was called off, the accused allegedly went to the former fiancée’s home carrying acid, and both sisters were attacked.
The reason given by the family for ending the marriage was the alleged drug addiction of the accused. That remains an allegation at this stage rather than a finding established by a court.
There is also no indication in the available reporting that the accused has publicly responded to the allegations or disputed the family’s account.
The case remains under police investigation.
What happens next
Police are questioning Bhati following his arrest, while the two victims are receiving medical treatment. Further details about the charges, the women’s medical condition and the investigation are expected to emerge as authorities proceed with the case.
For now, the central facts are based on the police account and the complaint filed by the victims’ family. Any additional claims about the circumstances of the broken engagement or the accused’s alleged drug use should be treated accordingly unless supported by further evidence.
