India vs Japan T20I Tickets Sold Out Ahead of September 22 Match

Tickets for the first-ever senior men’s international cricket match between India and Japan have sold out, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) announced on September 10, adding another milestone to a fixture that is already significant for Japanese cricket.

India and Japan will meet in a one-off T20 International at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture on September 22. The match is being played as part of the Suzuki Cup and will begin at 1 p.m. local time, or 9:30 a.m. IST.

The JCA announced the ticket sellout through its social media channels, thanking supporters for their response to the fixture. The association described the game as the first meeting between Japan and India on the international cricket stage.

A first for India and Japan

Although India and Japan have crossed paths in broader sporting and cricketing contexts, the September 22 fixture will be the first official international match between their senior men’s cricket teams.

The BCCI and JCA announced the match earlier this month. The fixture will launch Sport 75, an initiative intended to promote sporting cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries as they mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The initiative follows an agreement reached during a summit involving Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It also forms part of wider sporting cooperation between India and Japan, including India’s stated ambition to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia said the match would allow India to take cricket into new territory while helping introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.

Sano prepares for a packed occasion

The sellout is particularly notable given the relatively small scale of the venue.

The Sano International Cricket Ground has a listed capacity of about 2,000 spectators. The JCA previously said the venue, which normally hosts events with a much smaller crowd, would be adapted to accommodate up to 2,000 fans for the India-Japan match.

Tickets had been offered across several seating categories, including grandstand seating at 10,000 yen, folding-chair seating at 5,000 yen and standing admission at 3,000 yen. Children aged 12 and under could attend free without requiring their own seat.

With tickets now sold out, the September 22 match is set to take place in front of a full house.

India arrive as T20 world champions

The challenge facing Japan will be considerable.

India enter the match as the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions and the world’s top-ranked men’s T20I side, according to the ICC. The game will also serve as part of India’s preparation for the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

India are scheduled to enter the Asian Games men’s cricket tournament at the quarter-final stage, while Japan will begin in the group phase. The India-Japan match therefore gives both teams a different kind of preparation shortly before the Games begin.

For Japan, the opportunity is less about the result alone and more about facing one of the strongest teams in international cricket on home soil.

Japan name squad for landmark fixture

Japan have already named their 15-player squad for the match, with Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming retained as captain.

The squad includes experienced players Ibrahim Takahashi and Declan Suzuki-McComb, both of whom have played more than 50 T20Is for Japan. The selection also includes Jake Kusuda-Nairn and Tsuyoshi Takada, who have earned opportunities through domestic and international performances.

The same group is set to represent Japan in the country’s home Asian Games campaign, which begins shortly after the India match. Japan’s next scheduled Asian Games fixture is against Afghanistan on September 24.

More than a one-off match

The significance of the fixture extends beyond the 20-over contest itself.

Japan has been working to build a stronger cricket structure and has hosted major international events, including the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific qualifier. The Sano ground was one of the venues used for that tournament.

The JCA has also emphasized its intention to use the India fixture to strengthen its relationship with the BCCI and develop cricket in Japan.

For Indian cricket, meanwhile, the match represents an opportunity to take the national team into a market where the sport remains relatively small but is developing. The sellout suggests there is significant local and international interest in seeing India’s players appear in Japan.

Broadcast arrangements have also been finalized in India. Star Sports will provide television coverage, while FanCode has secured digital streaming rights for the match.

The September 22 fixture will therefore have a full stadium waiting for it before the first ball is bowled. What began as a diplomatic and sporting celebration has become a notable event in Japan’s cricket calendar — and the first India-Japan senior men’s international meeting is now guaranteed to play out before a sold-out crowd.
