Song Yadong Shocks Umar Nurmagomedov With Stunning Shanghai KO

Song Yadong delivered a stunning upset at UFC Shanghai on Saturday, knocking out former title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov at 1:48 of the second round in the main event at Shanghai’s Oriental Sports Center.

The Chinese bantamweight caught Nurmagomedov with a powerful uppercut as the Russian moved in for a takedown attempt. Song followed with punches before referee Marc Goddard stopped the contest. The UFC officially recorded the result as a knockout at 1:48 of Round 2.

It was the biggest victory of Song’s UFC career and his second consecutive win.

Nurmagomedov controlled much of the opening round

Nurmagomedov, who entered the fight as the No. 3-ranked bantamweight according to the UFC’s event listing, used his grappling early.

He caught one of Song’s kicks and took the Chinese fighter to the canvas. Song briefly threatened with a guillotine choke, but Nurmagomedov escaped and maintained top control.

Song eventually returned to his feet, but Nurmagomedov had done enough to take the opening round on the scorecard of MMA Weekly’s reporter, who scored it 10-9 for the Russian.

The fight changed almost immediately in the second.

Nurmagomedov attempted another takedown, and Song stuffed it. Moments later, as Nurmagomedov changed levels again, Song found the opening he needed.

The uppercut landed cleanly and sent Nurmagomedov down. Song’s follow-up strikes forced the stoppage.

The official finish came at 1:48.

A major setback for Nurmagomedov

Nurmagomedov had entered Shanghai as one of the UFC’s leading bantamweight contenders and a former title challenger. The UFC had promoted the matchup as a pivotal fight in the division’s title picture.

The loss drops Nurmagomedov’s professional record to 20-2, according to Sherdog’s event record, and ends his two-fight winning streak. It is also the first knockout loss of his professional career.

His previous defeat came against Merab Dvalishvili in a bantamweight title fight. Nurmagomedov had subsequently rebuilt momentum with two victories before facing Song in Shanghai.

For Song, the result moves him to 24-9-1 professionally and gives him another high-profile win at a crucial point in his career.

Song had already been pushing for a title opportunity

Song arrived in Shanghai after submitting former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo by guillotine choke at UFC Macau on May 30. That victory came at 4:42 of the second round.

Before the Nurmagomedov fight, Song had openly targeted a title opportunity. UFC published an interview with him ahead of the bout under the headline, “With This Fight I Will Get A Title Shot.”

After backing up that claim with a knockout over a top contender, Song is now in a much stronger position in the bantamweight title conversation.

The timing is also notable. The UFC’s current bantamweight picture includes a championship meeting between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili, while Song’s win gives the division another legitimate contender to consider.

Whether the UFC immediately rewards Song with a title fight remains to be determined.

Shanghai delivers another major UFC moment

The victory was particularly significant for Song because it came in front of his home-country audience.

UFC’s return to Shanghai was headlined by the matchup between Nurmagomedov and Song, with the promotion billing the bout as a clash between elite bantamweights chasing another opportunity at UFC gold.

Song instead produced the night’s defining moment with a finish that lasted less than two full rounds.

For Nurmagomedov, the next step will be about rebuilding after the most damaging defeat of his career. For Song, the question is now how quickly the UFC moves him toward the top of the division.

His performance in Shanghai made the case considerably harder to ignore.
