Switzerland Rave Shooting - 1 Dead, 5 Injured in Aarau

One person was killed and five others were injured after gunfire broke out near a rave in Aarau, northern Switzerland, early Sunday, according to Aargau cantonal police and reports from Swiss and international news agencies. Some of the injured were seriously hurt.

The shooting happened at the Schachen racecourse in Aarau, where the Aarauer Rave VOL. 7 was being held. About 3,500 people attended the techno event, which ran from Saturday afternoon into the early hours of Sunday.

Police said a large-scale operation was launched after the shooting. Large parts of Aarau were cordoned off, while officers increased their presence in and around the town as a precaution. Authorities also began searching for the person or people responsible.

Shooting reported shortly before 3 a.m.

The incident was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. local time, according to Swiss public broadcaster SRF. At the time, the racecourse was hosting the Aarauer Rave, an electronic music event. Police told SRF that shots had been fired into a crowd.

Aargau police initially described the incident as involving “several victims” without immediately specifying whether anyone had died or how many people had been injured. Later reports, citing police information, put the toll at one dead and five injured. Reuters reported that some of those wounded were in serious condition.

Police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold told Blick that several shots had been fired within a large group of people. A witness reported hearing bursts of gunfire.

The precise circumstances of the shooting, including what led to it and who fired the weapon, had not been publicly established.

Police launch manhunt

Aargau cantonal police asked members of the public to stay away from the area while the operation continued. Investigators also appealed to witnesses to provide photographs or video recordings that could help establish what happened.

A Super Puma military helicopter was deployed during the response, while police, emergency services and other specialist units worked at the scene. SRF reported that the racecourse area was extensively sealed off.

Reuters reported that police had launched a manhunt and asked the public to share footage or photographs from the incident. No suspect had been publicly identified in the latest reports reviewed for this story.

Event drew thousands to Aarau racecourse

The shooting occurred during the annual Aarauer Rave at the Schachen racecourse. Event listings from Switzerland Tourism and Aargau Tourism show the event was scheduled for August 29, with the advertised programme running from the afternoon into the early hours of Sunday.

The event’s published programme featured several electronic music acts, including Henri Bergmann, Ronny Grauer, Sam Madi, Lell Nahar, Lost and Found and MoODoS. The reported attendance of roughly 3,500 gives an indication of the size of the gathering, although it does not establish how many people remained at the venue when the shooting occurred.

Aarau, the capital of the canton of Aargau, lies roughly 40 kilometres west of Zurich.

Motive and suspect remain unknown

Authorities had not publicly disclosed a motive or identified a suspect in the latest available reports. It was also not clear whether the shooting was directed at a particular person or group.

The investigation remained active on Sunday, with police continuing to examine evidence and seek material from witnesses.

Switzerland has a relatively high rate of civilian gun ownership compared with many European countries, but Reuters noted that violent shootings remain uncommon. The country tightened its gun-control rules in 2019.

For now, the key unanswered questions concern the identity of the shooter, the motive and the circumstances that led to gunfire at a crowded event.
