Chelsea opened the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24, 2026, giving Xabi Alonso a winning start in his first competitive league match in charge.
João Pedro struck inside the opening minute, Morgan Rogers scored on his competitive Chelsea debut, and Cole Palmer added a third shortly after half-time. Fulham twice reduced the deficit through Josh King and Gonzalo García but could not find a late equaliser.
The result gives Chelsea three points from their opening fixture, while Fulham begin Álvaro Arbeloa’s tenure with a narrow defeat.
Chelsea make immediate start
The visitors needed only 31 seconds to take the lead.
Palmer released João Pedro behind the Fulham defence, and the Brazilian lifted his finish over Bernd Leno. Reuters reported that the goal was the fastest scored on the opening day of a Premier League season.
Chelsea continued to threaten during the opening stages, with Palmer and Rogers involved prominently in their attacking moves.
Fulham gradually settled and drew level in the 23rd minute. Josh King worked his way into the Chelsea penalty area and fired beyond Robert Sánchez after a passing move down the Blues’ left.
Chelsea responded before half-time.
Four minutes before the interval, Maxence Lacroix carried the ball forward and supplied Rogers, who finished to restore Chelsea’s lead. It was the England international’s first competitive goal for the club following his move from Aston Villa. Chelsea’s official match report confirmed Lacroix’s role in creating the goal.
Palmer adds Chelsea’s third
Chelsea extended their advantage four minutes into the second half.
Rogers helped move the ball forward to João Pedro, who then found Palmer. The England international finished between Leno’s legs to make it 3-1.
Fulham responded quickly.
Timothy Castagne’s effort was saved by Sánchez, but the rebound fell to Gonzalo García, who headed home in the 54th minute. The goal gave Fulham renewed hope with more than half an hour still to play.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser as the game entered its final stages. King went close again, while Antonee Robinson missed an opportunity after finding space behind the Chelsea defence.
Sánchez was also called upon late in the match, including a save to deny Ryan Sessegnon.
Chelsea briefly appeared to have added a fourth when João Pedro converted after a save from Leno, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Alonso’s side nevertheless held on for the three points.
A promising attacking start for Alonso
The victory offered an early indication of the attacking options available to Alonso.
João Pedro, Rogers and Palmer all scored, with the three combining effectively during periods of Chelsea’s best football. New centre-back Lacroix also contributed to the winning goal on his competitive debut.
There were concerns at the other end, however. Fulham created enough opportunities to keep the match alive after Chelsea established a 3-1 lead, and the visitors had to defend their advantage during the closing stages.
Alonso described the performance as professional and mature after the match, although the scoreline reflected a game in which Chelsea’s attacking quality was matched by periods of defensive uncertainty.
The match was also the first Premier League meeting between Alonso and Arbeloa as managers. Both Spaniards had worked at Real Madrid, while their paths had previously crossed as players.
What happens next
Chelsea return to action on Thursday, Aug. 27, when they host Luton Town in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge. Their next Premier League fixture is at home against Brighton on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Fulham also face a quick turnaround. They host AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup on Thursday before returning to Premier League action against Crystal Palace on Sept. 5.
For Alonso, the immediate task is to build on an opening-night win that showcased Chelsea’s attacking potential while leaving some defensive questions to address. For Fulham, Arbeloa’s first Premier League match ended in defeat, but his side remained within one goal until the final whistle.
